  • Quick Report: Garagiste Festival L.A. 7/11/2015

The Garagiste Festival is an event that tours California highlighting the wines of small producers generally making less than 1,500 cases of wine per year.  It is a non-profit event, sending its proceeds to invest in future winemakers and grape growers in the Cal Poly Wine and Viticulture program.

We attended one of their events in Solvang a few years ago, and were glad to have a chance to catch them here in L.A. at the Wiltern yesterday.

61 wineries were represented.  In most cases the winemaker/owner was pouring the wines and taking questions and making new fans.  For them, this is a chance to build their fan base and wine clubs.  For us, on the consumer side, this is that opportunity to discover some gems and get in on the ground floor of an allocation list.  Most of these producers don’t have tasting rooms.  Their wines aren’t sold in stores.  They may have some restaurant placements.  You are not likely to find them on your own. National Doughnut Day! (Everywhere) – 6/05

    Rainbow Sprinkles Rule!

    Happy National Doughnut Day!

We all love Donuts.  Let’s face it.  We know they are perhaps the least healthy food on the planet.  But even the full blown Vegan, anti-sugar fanatic secretly craves the joy of a doughnut from time to time.   Rainbow Sprinkles are my kryptonite. Continue Reading

    LA Wine Fest (Hollywood) — 5/30, 5/31

A bevy of wine, spirits, beer, food trucks and general gluttony for your indulgence.  What’s not to like?

Hamilton Russell Vertical Tasting at Woodland Hills Wine Co. — 5/30

Saturday from 3-6 PM, taste what many consider the best wines from South Africa, and among the best Pinots in the world.  Pinot and Chard do well in the coastal Walker Bay appellation, and the more specific Hemel-En-Aarde Valley is famous for its Pinot.  A great way to treat your palate and your wine brain to some tasty education this weekend.  Continue Reading

    Your Backyard!

That’s right, the best place to drink wine this weekend is in your own backyard.  It’s time to kick off Summer.  Drink Rosé!!!  You know we love a good Rosé here at CouchWine.com.  If you’re ready to expand your Rosé vocabulary, find yourself a nice Rosé of Pinot Noir.  Luscious wines full of strawberry notes with a dry finish.  Great backyard chillin’ and grillin’.

Off Market Street Progressive Cornhole Tournament (Ventura) — 5/23

This is perhaps the worse (or best?) name for an event I’ve seen in years.  But it’s real.  The members of the Off Market Tasting Trail in Ventura are hosting a FREE Cornhole Tournament that moves from venue to venue as the day goes on.   Few things in America go together better than drinkin’ and cornholin’ (you can quote me on that).   Continue Reading

Rose Extravaganza at domaineLA (Los Angeles) – 4/26/2015

Its hard to express how much I love a good Rosé but suffice it to say, it’s ALOT.  So how about a Rosé tasting with Lobster Rolls?!?  That is full of win.  The folks at domaineLA are pouring Rosés and serving Lobster Rolls from Knuckle & Claw at their Sunday tasting this week.   Great flight representing a variety of different Rosé styles.  Man up and drink pink wine! We want to start this week with a shout out for a special charity event happening Saturday night in Agoura.

Hope’s Haven Poker Tourney & BBQ Fundraiser (Agoura) – 4/18/2015

The folks at Camarillo based Hope’s Haven run a great charity that supports local hospital-bound and chronically ill children.  Please take a moment and check out their website to see some of the examples of the excellent work they do.  For instance, they have provided the pediatric ICUs of several local hospitals with iPads for the kids’ use and are working on providing an iPad for every pediatric bed in the county. Saturday night they’re hosting one of their annual fundraisers, a poker tournament, casino night and BBQ.  This event is a blast every year with 100 plus poker players, lots of food…and YES there is even wine!  Please support these great local folks and their cause!

    Jordan Tasting at Wally’s (L.A.) – 4/11/2015

Jordan Winery makes wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander Valley appellation in Sonoma County.  Wally’s is doing a vertical of 5 vintages from 2002 to 2011 (current release).  If you aren’t familiar with Alexander Valley style Cabs, we highly recommend a drop by, as Jordan is one of the benchmarks for this style.  Much more elegant than a typical Napa Cab, these Cabs have tons of character and drink beautifully.

Sheila’s Wine Bar (Camarillo) – All weekend

@805Foodie posted a great note in her VC Star article today about Sheila’s Wine Bar in Camarillo.  The owners’ son is on the chef track and is home from the CIA in Napa for the summer and just did an Continue Reading

    Cochon 555 – Epic Food/Wine Fest (Santa Monica) – 3/29/2015

5 Chefs, 5 Pigs, 5 Winemakers.  That’s the slogan for this travelling food contest where local chefs utilize the whole hog to make a number of dishes, and if you buy a ticket, you get to eat them and vote for the winner.  Endless local food and drink options included.  You really need to click on their link above to see all the great local folks involved.  The winning chef goes on to compete in the national final.  Absolute no-brainer for this weekend if you have the time.

    Garagiste Festival:  Southern Exposure (Solvang)

The Garagiste Festival is focused on showcasing tiny winemakers and those just getting started.  Particularly they focus on wineries making less than 1500 cases per year.  It’s a great way to explore new wines, meet and network with budding winemakers and to find some real gems.  These are folks who don’t have tasting rooms and they really want to meet you and show off their juice.  Always a fun, friendly event with great access. Cult Burgundy tasting at domaineLA (Los Angeles) – 3/15/2015

Hot ticket at domaineLA this weekend.  If you want to get your French on, this should be a delicious way to do it with tastings from Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey and Domaine Marc Roy, including an example of old vines from each.  Cheese included.  Sunday from 2-5 PM.  Click the link above for more details.

The Cave at the Ventura Wine Company (Ventura)

The Cave has a new chef and has just released their new menu for March, and it looks great.  Always delicious bites to go with their great wine tasting.  See our review here.  Check it all out on their Facebook page.  We are going up to “investigate” ourselves.  Also raise some bubbly while you’re there for Manager/Owner Nikki, who just welcomed a vintage 2015 baby boy.  Congrats, Nikki!   Continue Reading
