  • Lesson 1: Taste, Taste, Taste!

(Muse of Imbibement – A to Z Pinor Noir, Oregon, 2012)

    First and Foremost, we taste

The best way to learn about wine is to taste as much wine as possible.  This is the first and quintessential Couchwine Credo.

Wine tasting is fun.  Or maybe, more importantly, it is fun if you do it right.  Take your good friends, have a good time, taste some good wine.  This formula may be as important to wine tasting as that E = mc2 thing is to…whatever that’s about. Continue Reading

  • Ventura Wine Co. and The Cave

To kick off our So. Cal. Wine Scene section, I am not going to take you to the heart of hipsterville in the city, but instead up the coast to the city of Ventura and one of my favorite wine spots, the Ventura Wine Co. and their wine bar The Cave.  This spot is a true gem and I’m excited to share it with you.

These guys pack a triple-punch of awesomeness into a small package:  1) Great wine prices.  They are very possibly the best priced retail wine shop in So. Cal.  2) The Cave, their wine bar, has 32 wines up on self-serve enomatic machines that you can taste at will.  3) The food served in The Cave is consistently good and well priced.   As a small store, the selection isn’t huge, but they always have a good selection of essentials as well as interesting new finds. • Value Wine of the Week – 12/1/2014

    Price:  $10.79

    Wine:  Columbia Crest, H3 Merlot

    Vintage:  2011

    Appellation:  Horse Heaven Hills

My first choice for Value Wine of the Week won’t shock anyone in the wine world.  It is the 2011 Columbia Crest, H3 Merlot from the Horse Heaven Hills AVA.

I picked this up at Total Wine and Spirits for $10.79 after the “mix six” discount.  Online research shows the average price is about $14.

This wine shows the great character of Merlot, without breaking the bank.  The balance and structure is above average, with a nice finish that helps it stand above most other cheap stuff. Continue Reading
