WineShouts – 06/05/2015 Edition

Happy weekend wine lovers!  We’ve put together a few spots where you can get your wine on this weekend in L.A.  and points North.  Know about another great spot or event this weekend or upcoming?  Please let us know in the comments or send us an email (see below).  Cheers!

National Doughnut Day! (Everywhere) – 6/05

Rainbow Sprinkles Rule!

Happy National Doughnut Day!

We all love Donuts.  Let’s face it.  We know they are perhaps the least healthy food on the planet.  But even the full blown Vegan, anti-sugar fanatic secretly craves the joy of a doughnut from time to time.   Rainbow Sprinkles are my kryptonite.

So on this national day of celebration, let’s give in and grab a donut to enjoy with a nice dessert wine.  A Sauternes or a  Tokaji?  Both fine and obvious choices for a Rainbow Sprinkles I think.  Or maybe a nice Trockenbeerenauslese.  Personally I like a little toastiness with my sweet whites.  Enjoy your doughnut, folks.

22nd Annual Casa Pacifica Festival (Camarillo) – 6/7

This is the pretty much the premier Wine/Food/Beer tasting event of the year in the Conejo Valley region.  This charity event raises funds for the excellent Casa Pacifica organization which provides a wide variety of services to children and families in need, particularly abused and neglected children, providing everything from shelter to legal advocacy.  This is a gigantic event with wineries and breweries pouring, as well as a vast array of restaurants and bakeries showing off their wares.  A massive silent auction and live music tie it all together.  You have four hours to take it all in and support a great cause.  You know, for kids?  Tickets still available online at the link above until 12 Noon on 6/6.  Then tickets can be had at the door.

Wally’s Grande Marque Champagne Event (Santa Monica) – 6/7

We didn’t want to leave you city folk out of the mass tasting fun, so here is another big event at the Le Merigot Beach Hotel, hosted by Wally’s with over 50 Champagnes and offerings from more than a dozen top, local restaurants, including Mélisse, a favorite of Mrs. Couch’s and mine.  This one also benefits a couple of worthy causes, the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation and Food on Foot.  They’ll also be serving cheese from Wally’s Cheese Box.  If you love you some cheese, Wally’s is killing it in this department.  Honestly, I’d go for the cheese alone.

French vs. California Tasting at Wade’s Wines (Westlake Village) – All weekend

Wade’s is tasting French and California wines grown from the same varietal against each other this weekend.  Not a throw-down, merely educational.  As we like to say, the only way to learn is to drink.  Wades is a great place to taste and kick start your evening before dinner nearby.

Summer Passport Weekend – Urban Wine Trail (Santa Barbara)

Buy a single passport for $75 and get free tastings and special events in each of the 26 tasting rooms on the Santa Barbara Urban Wine trail, which concentrates in the Funk Zone but includes tasting rooms throughout the city.  Santa Barbara is the king of atmosphere, food and shopping in SoCal.  It is also the perfect place to wander and wine taste.  Uber up State street to bag some excellent nosh.  Wine taste some more.  Do it Couch Wine style and take the Amtrak up from LA in the morning.  Then roll on home in the evening.  Beware, the late Amtrak back to LA gets pretty rowdy.
